Research Notes on Sarsaparilla
The sarsaparilla plant is used as a flavoring for beverages and in traditional folk medicine.1 In the 19th century, it was thought to be a remedy for syphilis although scientists have disproved this theory.2 It is now believed the most potent action of the sarsaparilla plant lies in its diuretic properties.2

- In the U.S., it is sold as a remedy for psoriasis.3
- No major side effects reported.4
- Consumption of very large amounts may lead to upset stomach.4
