SAM-e -- short for S-adenosylmethionine, a naturally occuring chemical in the body -- is used as a treatment for depression.1 SAM-e has been found to be as effective for treating depression as antidepressant medications.2 SAM-e is generally taken as a dietary supplement.3

  • SAM-e doesn't have the side effects on depression patients that antidepressant medication does.2
  • SAM-e begins working faster than antidepressant medication.2
  • Long term effects of patients taking SAM-e are not clearly known.2
