Research Notes on Safflower
Safflower is an annual herb which goes by various names including: American safflower, dyer's saffron, false saffron, bastard saffron, Mexican saffron and zaffer.1 Although it is commonly known for its oil, safflower has a long history of medicinal uses. Medical uses include angina, heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, Friedreich's ataxia and many other conditions.2
Fast Facts:
- It has also been used for dyes.3
- Was used for many years as a uterine tonic and to ease PMS and other related menstrual disorders.2
- Because safflower can bring on uterine bleeding, it should not be used by pregnant women.1
