Research Notes on Safest Antidepressant and Anti-Anxiety Drugs
In general, most antidepressants, such as Prozac, Paxil, and other SSRIs are safe. Side effects for these medications may include insomnia, agitation, sleepiness, nausea and headaches.1 The FDA has warned that there may be an increased risk of suicide caused from antidepressants, though this is still controversial.2 Short-term randomized clinical trials found that there are no completed suicides in these studies, according to psychiatrists.

- Sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil) are the best antidepressants for breastfeeding women.3
- An estimated 50 to 60 percent of individuals respond to antidepressants within the first two weeks of treatment.1
