Research Notes on Safe Use of Nasal Decongestants
Like most all medications, nasal decongestants are safe to use by most individuals within moderation.1 It is recommended that you only use nasal decongestant sprays for 3-5 days, as prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion and an increased need for the medicine.1 Saline nasal sprays, however, are considered safer and can be used up to six times each day.1
Fast Facts:
- Nasal decongestant sprays provide immediate relief of congestion while oral medications take longer to work.2
- Heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, and pregnancy are all potential conditions in which the use of decongestants may not be recommended. Speak with your physician before using an over the counter medication.3
- Decongestant nasal sprays can help treat the initial symptoms of a cold or allergies.1
