Research Notes on Safe Sex
Safe sex is taking precautions during sex that can keep you from getting sexually transmitted diseases (STD), or from giving an STD to your partner. These diseases include genital herpes, genital warts, HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and others.1
Fast Facts:
- Safe sex practices became prominent in the late 1980s as a result of the AIDS epidemic.2
- Having sex within a committed, mongamous, long-term relationship with someone who has tested free of STDs and HIV is also considered to be safe sex.3
- With the proper use, using condoms is the safest form of safe sex.1
