Research Notes on SSRI Withdrawal
Withdrawal symptoms can occur in people who abruptly quit taking their selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This is often referred to as "SSRI discontinuation syndrome," or "SSRI withdrawal syndrome."1 Slowly weaning off the SSRI may reduce or prevent withdrawal symptoms.2
Fast Facts:
- Speak with your physician if you have any symptoms of problems from withdrawal.3
- Adverse affects of withdrawal include but not limited to irritability, dizziness, agitation, tingling or burning sensation, anxiety, headaches, insomnia, confusion, and tiredness.1
- SSRIs are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression. They belong to a group of drugs known as antidepressants.4
