Research Notes on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a syndrome marked by the symptoms of sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year. Sleeping on the back has been recommended by (among others) the American Academy of Pediatrics (starting in 1992) to avoid SIDS, with the catchphrase "Back To Bed" and "Back to Sleep." The incidence of SIDS has fallen sharply in a number of countries in which the back to bed recommendation has been widely adopted, such as the US and New Zealand. ...read more from Wikipedia

  • SIDS claims the lives of about 2,500 infants each year in the United States.
  • A baby is more susceptible to SIDS if her or she was premature or low birth rate.
  • Babies who sleep on their stomachs are at high risk of SIDS.
  • Babies who were back sleepers and are suddenly switched to stomach sleeping are at the highest risk of SIDS.
  • SIDS incidence increases during cold weather.
  • African-American infants are twice as likely and Native American infants are about three times more likely to die of SIDS than caucasian infants.
  • Smoking cigarettes during or after pregnancy put a baby at considerably higher risk of SIDS.
  • More boys than girls fall victim to SIDS.
