Research Notes on Ritalin vs. Adderall
Ritalin (brand of methylphenidate) and Adderall (brand of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine combination) are drugs that are commonly used to treat children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD. Both drugs are effective in treating the disorder. Ritalin, other forms of methylphenidate (e.g., Concerta, Daytrana), Adderall, amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, and lisdexamfetamine are all classified as stimulants. All of these drugs, including Ritalin and Adderall, can have significant and sometimes serious side effects. Finding the optimal medication, as well as its dosage, usually results from some trial-and-error cooperation between the physician and the patient (and the parent in the case of children).1
Fast Facts:
- In 2007, the FDA required that manufacturers of all ADHD medications to develop Patient Medication Guides to alert patients of possible heart and psychiatric problems associated with these drugs.2
- The most common side effects of stimulants in children are decreased appetite, sleep problems, stomach aches, and headaches.1
- In general, patients who have known serious heart problems should not take stimulant drugs like Ritalin or Adderall.2
