Research Notes on Ritalin for Narcolepsy
Ritalin is prescribed to treat excessive daytime sleepiness, one of the symptoms of narcolepsy. Ritalin is a central nervous system stimulant lasting between two to five hours in the body.1 Stimulants are the first line treatment option for daytime sleepiness and sleep attacks for narcolepsy patients.2 Ritalin is well-known as a treatment for children with ADHD; off-label uses of Ritalin include adult ADHD, weight loss, and depression.3
Fast Facts:
- Ritalin is the brand name for the generic drug methylphenidate.1
- Ritalin is not recommended for children under the age of six.3
- Ritalin side effects include irritability, hypertension, increased heart rate, anxiety, substance abuse, and insomnia in the evening.2
- Scheduling short naps two or three times daily is also recommended in conjunction with medication.4
