Research Notes on Ritalin for Adult ADHD
Currently, limited clinical studies have been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of Ritalin in the treatment of adult ADHD. Ritalin is the brand name for the generic drug methylphenidate.1 It is a central nervous system stimulant prescribed to treat children with ADHD and narcolepsy.2

- This is an off-label use of this medication. While Ritalin is not FDA-approved to treat adult ADHD, some doctors prescribe it for this purpose.
- Stimulants are generally the first line of ADHD treatment and may be safe for adults in lower doses.3
- The use of stimulants by adults can raise the risk of substance abuse.4
- Adults may have an increased risk of high blood pressure or heart problems while taking stimulants for ADHD.1
