Research Notes on Ritalin Withdrawal
Ritalin withdrawal symptoms are not typical in patients using recommended dosages.1 Ritalin is classified as a stimulant that is used in the treatment of symptoms associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy.2 Currently, very limited clinical trials have been performed on the long-term effects and discontinuation of this medication.3 Consult with a health care professional prior to discontinuing Ritalin.
Fast Facts:
- Ritalin is a brand name for the generic drug methylphenidate.3
- Changes in heart rhythm, fatigue, and depression are symptoms that occur when discontinuing Ritalin.2
- The fetus may experience withdrawal symptoms if stopping Ritalin treatment during pregnancy.2
- Antidepressants may be prescribed while tapering Ritalin to prevent the risks of depression.2
