Research Notes on Ritalin Side Effects


The most common side effects of Ritalin are nervousness and insomnia. Other possible side effects include hypersensitivity, anorexia, nausea, dizziness, palpitations, headache, dyskinesia, drowsiness, blood pressure changes, tachycardia, angina, cardiac arrhythmia, abdominal pain, and weight loss.1 Some of these side effects may be controlled by adjusting the dosage of Ritalin.2

  • Ritalin side effects such as loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight loss during prolonged use, insomnia, and tachycardia may occur more often in children.2
  • Although rare, there have been reports of Tourette's syndrome while taking Ritalin.1
  • Some children may experience a temporary slow down in growth while taking Ritalin.3
