Research Notes on Ritalin History
Ritalin, also known as methylphenidate, is a mild central nervous system stimulant.1 Ritalin was first synthesized in 1944.2 The formula was then improved by 1950, and by 1954 it was being tested on humans.2 It was originally prescribed as treatment for depression, chronic fatigue, and narcolepsy.3 In the 1970s and early '80s the use of Ritalin to treat ADHD steadily increased.2

- Ritalin was first tested on lab rats and the studies revealed the rats were more focused.4
- Methylphenidate was patented in 1954 by the Ciba pharmaceutical company.3
- Ritalin comes in 5, 10, and 20mg water-soluble tablets.2
- The United States produces 90% of the world’s Ritalin.4
