Research Notes on Ritalin Abuse
Ritalin is classified as a stimulant and is sometimes abused by individuals for the "high" it induces. It is prescribed for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy.1 Common side effects of Ritalin misuse include tremors, agitation, rapid heartbeat, and hypertension.2
Fast Facts:
- Ritalin is a brand name for the generic drug methylphenidate.1
- Ritalin was introduced to the market in 1950; the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) monitors manufacturing, distribution, and prescription activity.3
- Psychiatric complications, which can include psychotic episodes, hallucinations, and paranoia, may occur while ingesting large quanties of Ritalin.2
- Tapering and behavioral therapy are the treatment regimen for individuals addicted to Ritalin.2
