Bipolar disorder is either untreated, under treated, or not appropriately treated over 60% of the time. People with untreated bipolar disorder are at a high risk for substance abuse, failed relationships, and failure in work or school. The risk of suicide is also substantially increased in individuals with untreated bipolar disorder. Studies have found that untreated bipolar disorder can even decrease life expectancy.1
