Research Notes on Risks of Antidepressant Medications
Antidepressants are medications that treat depression. According to studies less than 50 percent of those who take antidepressants become symptom free. The USDA has required that all depression medications include a warning label about the increased risk of suicide in children and young adults.1 In 2006 the warning for young adults was extended up to age 25.2
Fast Facts:
- Studies have shown that adults over the age of 50 taking certain antidepressants have an increased risk of fracture.3
- Studies have also shown that taking certain antidepressants during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects.4
- Despite these risks, most people can take antidepressants without experiencing any adverse effects.5
