Riluzole is a medication used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.1 Although it is not a cure for ALS, riluzole may postpone the need for a respirator or breathing tube.2 Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, upset stomach, diarrhea, headache and loss of appetite.3

  • While using riluzole, avoid charcoal-broiled foods as well as caffeine-containing products. Take medication on an empty stomach.4
  • Sold under brand name Rilutek.
  • Cigarette smoke can affect how your body reacts to riluzole. Inform your physician if you smoke.5
