Research Notes on Rheumatoid Arthritis vs. Osteoarthritis
Although many people understand they suffer from arthritis, they may not understand which type of arthritis is occuring in the body. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are two common, yet different, types of arthritis. The major difference between the two is that osteoarthritis is usually a result of the basic wear-and-tear on the body that comes with age, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that results in a distinct type of arthritis, with many different features.1
Fast Facts:
- Osteoarthritis typically affects the larger joints in the body such as hips and knees, while rheumatoid arthritis is almost always found in smaller joints such as the wrists and elbows.2
- Rheumatoid arthritis is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 60, while osteoarthritis usually only affects those over age 40.3
- While osteoarthritis affects both men and women equally, rheumatoid arthritis is found more often in women than men.3
- If you think you may have symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, you can take an OrganizedWisdom quiz to help determine whether or not you may have this condition.
