Research Notes on Rheumatoid Arthritis in Women
Although rheumatoid arthritis can affect both men and women, it is two to three times more common in women than men. Women are most commonly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis between the ages of 40 and 60.1 In addition, researchers now say that women suffer from more pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis than men.2
Fast Facts:
- Women appear to develop rheumatoid arthritis more due to hormonal fluctuations.3
- Women who breast feed have a slightly lower risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis.3
- Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 54 women out of every 100,000. Only about 29 out of every 100,000 men are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.4
