Research Notes on Rheumatoid Arthritis and Vision

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can affect the eyes and vision. The most common eye complication is inflammation of the episclera, a thin membrane that covers the white of the eye.1 It is usually mild, but the eye can become red and painful. Scleritis, inflammation of the white of the eye, is more serious and can lead to vision loss.2 Individuals with RA are also at risk for Sjogren’s syndrome. The severity of this condition depends on which parts of the eye are affected.

Fast Facts:

  • Consult an ophthalmologist for an evaluation if experiencing eye pain or vision changes.
  • Other eye conditions caused by RA include inflammation of the interior of the eye (uveitis), glaucoma, and cataracts.
  • Sjogren’s syndrome can lead to infection and scarring of the membrane that covers the eye and cornea.2
  • Treatment for these vision problems include corticosteroid eye drops and anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Early intervention is critical to protect the eyes from long-term damage.
  • A regular eye exam, including a complete dry eye evaluation, is recommended.
