Research Notes on Rheumatoid Arthritis and Pregnancy
Although rheumatoid arthritis can present some challenges to becoming pregnant, once conception has taken place the condition has little bearing on the outcome of the pregnancy. It often takes RA patients a bit longer than normal to conceive due to inconsistent ovulation, decreased libido, or erectile issues. However, many women report that RA symptoms improve significantly during pregnancy.1
Fast Facts:
- Not all rheumatoid arthritis medications are safe to use during pregnancy, so speak with your physician regarding the safest medications for you and your baby.2
- Most often, the same medications that are safe to take during pregnancy will also be considered safe to use during breastfeeding.2
- Unfortunately, up to 90% of all women with rheumatoid arthritis will experience a flare up during the first three months postpartum.3
