Research Notes on Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosis
There are steps your doctor will take to make a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. The first step is a meeting with him, to discuss your symptoms and review your history. Your doctor will also examine your joints, skin, and other parts of your body. X-rays and blood tests are also taken to assist with the diagnosis.1
Fast Facts:
- The American College of Rheumatology uses a criteria list for diagnosis. Diagnosis is made if at least four out of seven factors are present for six weeks.2
- Diagnosis can be difficult; your doctor may need to see your joints when the disease is active.2
- Rheumatoid arthritis can be tough to diagnose as it can mimic other diseases such as fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and gout.2
- If you think you may have symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, you can take an OrganizedWisdom quiz to help determine whether or not you may have this condition.
