Research Notes on Retinal Migraine

Retinal migraines, also known as ocular migraines, are the result of a sudden tightening of blood vessels.1 This causes a reduction in blood flow to the eye which leads to temporary vision loss.1 The vision loss is accompanied or followed by a headache. Retinal migraines rarely result in permanent loss of vision.2

Fast Facts:

  • A headache caused by a retinal migraine can last up to 72 hours.2
  • You may also see twinkling lights at the start of a retinal migraine.2
  • Retinal migraines are more common in women and people over the age of 40.1
