Respite Care

GuideWisdom™

This WisdomCard managed by: Aimee Abellaneda

The care of a family member with multiple and severe physical or mental disabilities, or the care of an elderly family member is a 24-hour-a-day commitment. The primary caregiver can suffer from burnout, depression, and other forms of distress. Respite care provides the caregiver a break from these demands. Respite care can take place in the home of the individual, or in a special facility or center. It can be for a few hours; or for an extended period of time. This allows the primary caregiver a chance to relax, enjoy favorite pastimes, allows the family to spend time together and lessens the pressures that can lead to neglect, divorce, or abuse.
