Research Notes on Respirators
A respirator is a device designed to protect the wearer from inhaling harmful dusts, fumes, vapors, and/or gases. Respirators come in a wide range of types and sizes used by the military, private industry, and the public.
There are two main categories: the air-purifying respirator, which forces contaminated air through a filtering element, and the air-supplied respirator, in which an alternate supply of fresh air is delivered. Within each category, different techniques are employed to reduce or eliminate noxious airborne contents. ...read more from Wikipedia
Fast Facts:
- The use of respirators has been documented from as far back as Leonardo di Vinci's time, in the 16th century.1
- Mechanical filter respirators use fibrous materials to trap particles from the air.2
- Chemical cartridge respirators utilize a media-filled cartridge to remove gases and vapors from the air.2
- Powered air-purifying respirators recycle contaminated air back to the user, after purification.2
- Supplied-air respirators or self-contained breathing apparatuses utilize supplied or filtered air, which is compressed, back to the user.2
