Research Notes on Reflexology and Depression
Reflexology stimulates the lymphatic system and promotes the release of endorphins, which are natural feel-good hormones that relieve the effects of stress.1 Depression affects the nervous system, moods, and thoughts, the way a person feels about himself and others, and the way he reacts to situations around him.1 The role of reflexology in depression is to create a sense of calm and well being. It is the practice of applying pressure strategically to areas of the feet and hands that correspond to specific body organs.2
Fast Facts:
- Depression affects 18 million Americans every year and is the most common mental health disorder in the UK.2 3
- Women are more likely to suffer from severe depression than men.4
- Counseling is an integral part of the management of depression.3
