Research Notes on Red Yeast Rice and Cholesterol
Red yeast rice is an extract of rice that has been fermented with Monascus purpureus, a type of yeast. Some forms of red yeast rice contain lovastatin, as well as other ingredients, that are known for controlling cholesterol. It has been used for centuries in China and other Asian countries, for its medicinal purposes.1 Because lovastatin is found in many prescription cholesterol-lowering medications, the FDA considers red yeast rice that contains lovastatin to be an unapproved drug, rather than a supplement, and has regulated the sale of it in the United States.2
Fast Facts:
- Red yeast rice can lower LDL levels by up to 26% over an eight week period, according to one study.1
- The FDA has warned that red yeast rice may lead to kidney disease.1
- Long term affects of red yeast rice have not been studied.1
- Because there are many different strains of the yeast, and limited research, an ideal dose of red yeast rice is not known.1
