Research Notes on Red Blood Cells
The main function of red blood cells is carrying oxygen to body tissue and organs. Another important function is the transporting of carbon dioxide to the lungs so that it can be expelled from the body. Red blood cells are constantly being made in the bone marrow. Red blood cells have a life span of 120 days.1
