Research Notes on Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder

Rapid cycling in bipolar disorder is defined as having four or more manic and depressive episodes in one year.1 About 10 - 20% of those with bipolar have rapid cycling, and it is more common in those who suffer from bipolar II.1 Rapid cycling is often confused with normal mood swings, making it hard to make a diagnosis if you haven't already been diagnosed as bipolar.2 Treatment for rapid cycling is often difficult because typically prescribed antidepressant medications are known to increase the risk of rapid cycling.3

Fast Facts:

  • If you suffer from rapid cycling, avoiding caffeine and highly sugared foods may help to decrease the severity and risk of an episode onset.3
  • Ultra-rapid cycling occurs when four or more episodes occur within a month.4
  • Individuals suffering from rapid cycling often spend more time in a depressive state than manic or hypomanic states.1
