Research Notes on Radiation Side Effects

Radiation therapy is painless, but can cause various side effects. Some common side effects include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, dry mouth, throat irritation, fatigue, skin reactions and loss of appetite and taste.1 Depending on the part of the body receiving radiation there may be other side effects such as diarrhea, sexual changes, swelling and urinary and bladder changes. Certain side effects can sometimes occur 6 months after radiation has ended. These are called late side effects and may include infertility, joint problems and secondary cancer.2

Fast Facts:

  • Most side effects are usually located in the area receiving radiation.1
  • Most side effects disappear within 2 months after radiation therapy has ended.2
  • It is estimated that approximately 50% of all those diagnosed with cancer will undergo radiation therapy.2
