Research Notes on Smoking Cessation
Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States.1 Without a doubt, people who stop smoking have a tremendous health benefit over those who don't--and the earlier the better. Focusing on the benefits of becoming a non-smoker, recognizing the dangers of smoking, and setting a quit date is the first step. There are both prescription and over-the-counter medications that have been proven to be effective when it comes to kicking the habit.2 Some alternative treatments, including hypnosis and biofeedback, may also be helpful.3
Fast Facts:
- Becoming a non-smoker drastically reduces the likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke.4
- Remaining smoke free for 10 years reduces the risk of lung cancer by 50%.5
- People who quit smoking experience fewer respiratory illness, such as pneumonia, influenza, bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and the common cold.5
- Women who quit smoking are likely to have an easier time becoming pregnant.5
- Men who quit smoking are less likely to have problems with impotence.5
