Research Notes on Purinethol and Pregnancy
Purinethol should only be used during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Purinethol as a category D medication. Drugs in this class have been shown to be harmful to a developing fetus when administered during pregnancy in animal studies.1
Fast Facts:
- Women who become pregnant while being treated with Purinethol should consult with a physician as soon as pregnancy is confirmed.2
- It is unknown whether Purinethol is excreted in the breast milk of breastfeeding mothers.2
- Purinethol is a brand name of the generic medication mercaptopurine.2
