Research Notes on Pulmonary Hypertension and Pregnancy
Pulmonary hypertension during pregnancy is associated with a high mortality rate.1 Women are advised to use barrier methods of contraception or progesterone-only birth control pills, as combined oral contraceptives may increase the risk of venous thromboembolism.2 If you suffer from pulmonary hypertension and wish to become pregnant, discuss the matter with your physician so that you may be monitored closely.
Fast Facts:
- Increased blood volume and cardiac output may lead to heart failure and/or shock.1
- You may be hospitalized during the third trimester of pregnancy to be monitored.1
- Premature labor is common, but in cases where labor does not occur spontaneously, delivery is generally scheduled for 32-34 weeks gestation.3
