Research Notes on Lungs
The lungs are the organ that allows us to breathe. Oxygen is needed for fueling all of the cells and organs so the body can function. The lungs extract the oxygen from the air breathed in and infuses it into the bloodstream, to be used throughout the body. Carbon dioxide is the by product of our bodily processes. It is disposed of when we exhale. The lungs continuously works with the heart via the bloodstream by relieving it of the waste (carbon dioxide) and replenishing it with fresh oxygen.1
Fast Facts:
- In a normal day, we breathe nearly 25,000 times.2
- About 10 percent of the lung is solid tissue; the rest is filled with air and blood.3
- While in the resting state, the entire blood volume of the body passes through the lungs each minute.3
