Research Notes on Public Option in Health Plan May Be Dropped
The public option is under scrutiny between the Republicans and Democrats and its importance in health care reform. President Obama states "the public option, whether we have it or we don't have it, is not the entirety of health care reform." The public option is a new government insurance program, which would operate under a national structure cooperating with state affiliates. It would be completely independent from the government except for the three to four billion dollars initially required to start the program.1 Currently, it is still undecided whether the public option will survive.
Fast Facts:
- Supporters of the public option believe the competition created with private insurance companies will ultimately benefit the public.2
- Republicans are in opposition of the public option due to the possibility of affecting private insurers financially.1
- The public option has been an essential component in Obama's agenda for health care system overhauling.3
