Research Notes on Psychotropic Drugs
Psychotropic drugs (or psychotropic substances) is "any drug capable of affecting the mind, emotions, and behavior."1 These drugs may be used illegally for recreational purposes, or could be prescribed by a health care provider for medical use. They are often associated with addiction.2
Fast Facts:
- Prescription psychotropic drugs include antipsychotics (typical and atypical), antidepressants (tricyclics, SSRIs, MAOIs, and others), mood stabilizer drugs (used for bipolar disorder), anti-anxiety drugs, and stimulants (used in the treatment of ADHD).3
- Illegal psychotropics include hallucinogens such as LSD and "magic mushrooms."4
- Stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and cocaine are also psychotropic substances.4
- Other psychotropics include depressants such as alcohol, barbiturates and benzodiazepines.4
- Many patients have similar questions about taking medications. OrganizedWisdom has psychiatrists addressing the most common concerns about taking these drugs.
