Research Notes on Psychotic Depression
Psychotic depression is when a person with depression experiences hallucinations and delusions.1 People who are experiencing these delusions and hallucinations are usually aware that they are not real.2 It is often hard to diagnosis this type of depression because the person tends to hide what is going on out of shame.2 Treatment usually involves medications like antidepressants and antipsychotics. Since psychotic depression is considered to be a major depression, the chances of suicide are heightened.3 It is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Fast Facts:
- Agitation, anxiety, and insomnia are all signs of psychotic depression.2
- With proper treatment, most people recover within a year.2
- Approximately one in four people who are treated for depression in a hospital suffer from psychotic depression.2
