Research Notes on Psychosurgery
Psychosurgery is the medical term for any type of surgical technique used to destroy brain tissue in order to attempt to treat a psychiatric disorder. Although once widely used, psychosurgery is rarely used today, as the results have been less than ideal. Psychosurgery should only be used as a last resort for extreme, debilitating psychiatric conditions.1
Fast Facts:
- Researchers have found evidence that psychosurgery was performed as far back in history as 40,000 years ago in Neolithic times.2
- The lobotomy is probably the best known psychosurgery.2
- Today, a very small number of neurologists still employ the use of psychosurgery to treat life-threatening psychiatric conditions if all other treatment methods have failed.1
