Research Notes on Psychosomatic Pain
The term psychosomatic pain refers to a condition in which a person complains of having pain, yet no physical cause can be found.1 Psychosomatic Illnesses involve the mind and the body. Such as with the case of depression which not only has emotional symptoms but can cause aches and pains through-out the body as well.2
Fast Facts:
- One study suggest that the incidences of psychosomatic pain increases in adults that were abused as children.3
- People that suffer from this type of pain are often told that "It's all in your head."1
- Treatment for psychosomatic pain may include physical therapy, massage therapy, and drugs such as anticonvulsants dietary supplements, muscle relaxers, and antidepressants.3
