Research Notes on Psychiatric Service Dogs
Psychiatric service dogs can help people with many psychiatric or mental disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, social anxiety, etc.1 These dogs are trained to perform activities such as reminding the patient to take his medication, retrieving items like the phone, and interrupting harmful behavior. Some patients may benefit from an emotional support animal, which will provide companionship and emotional support, rather than a trained psychiatric service dog.2
Fast Facts:
- Psychiatric service dogs are trained based on an individual's disability.2
- Psychiatric service dogs can be any breed or size.2
