Research Notes on Psychiatric Evaluation of Adults
Psychiatric evaluation of adults might be necessary to diagnose emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders. The evaluation is based on the behaviors that the individual presents. During the psychiatric evaluation a therapist will assess the relationship of the physical, genetic, environmental, social, emotional, and cognitive components that are being affected as a result of the behavior which is presented by the adult.1 Psychiatric evaluations often require many hours spread out over several office visits, and the length of time depends on the severity of the problems being presented.2
Fast Facts:
- A psychiatric evaluation is an interview between the patient and a professional mental health provider such as a psychiatrist or psychologist.3
- There are three main types of psychiatric evaluations, these include a general psychiatric evaluation, an emergency evaluation, and a clinical consultation.2
- Information about the patient may be gathered from other physicians, family members, or spouses.2
- Once the problem is identified, a treatment plan can be recommended for that particular individual based on his or her needs.1
