Research Notes on Psoriatic Arthritis and Nail Ridges

Nail ridges are a very common sign of psoriatic arthritis. It is believed that 90 percent of people will see nail involvement first. This may include: ridges, pitting, yellow-orange discoloration, or pulling away from the nail bed.1 Currently, there are a few assessment tools being used to help assess someone’s level of psoriatic arthritis by the condition of their nails. One of these tests is the Nail Psoriasis Severity Index. It is a good indicator of psoriatic arthritis severity.2

Fast Facts:

  • Psoriasis can involve the nails without arthritis, but dermatologists warn their patients to let them know if they begin experiencing joint pain.1
  • The total loss of a finger nail is known as onycholysis.3
  • The form of psoriatic arthritis most likely to show symptoms in the nails is known as distal interphalangeal predominant.3
