Research Notes on Psoriasis and Tanning
Tanning in natural sunlight or with prescribed light therapy can aid in the treatment of psoriasis. UVB rays of the light spectrum are the type of light that provides effective treatment. UVB rays can be absorbed by the skin when tanning outside or with special light therapy.1
Fast Facts:
- The tanning beds at most commercial tanning salons emit UVA light and not UVB.2
- UVA light is not nearly as effective at controlling psoriasis as UVB light is.2
- Some physicians may recommend tanning beds as a last resort treatment plan if UVB light and natural sunshine are unavailable.2
- Consult a physician before beginning any tanning treatment plan for psoriasis; overexposure to light can irritate psoriasis or risk other conditions such as skin cancer.2
