Research Notes on Psoriasis Treatments
Treatments for psoriasis include options such as over-the-counter and prescription topical treatments, light therapy, and oral medications.1 Topical preparations include corticosteroids, synthetic forms of vitamin D, retinoids, moisturizers, and even coal tar.1 Phototherapy options can range from simply spending a predetermined amount of time in the sunlight to intensive UVB treatments.1 Oral medications are typically only prescribed for severe psoriasis.1 Methotrexate, azathioprine, cyclosporine, and hydroxyurea are all oral medications that may decrease the severity of psoriasis.1
Fast Facts:
- It is very common for several different types of treatment to be administered on a rotating schedule in order to have a greater effect.2
- Soaking in bath water with added oils can help the body to retain moisture, leading to decreased itching.3
- No one therapy is known to work for all individuals suffering from psoriasis, so it may take some time to find the right mix for you. It is not uncommon for two to six weeks to pass before significant improvement is noted, and it can take several months before redness disappears.4
