Research Notes on Psoriasis Myths

Like many conditions in which neither the cause nor cure is known, psoriasis is a commonly misunderstood illness. Although the psoriatic patches on the skin may seem unsightly, the condition is not contagious regardless of appearance. In addition, those who do not suffer from psoriasis may feel the condition is caused by a failure to bathe or keep skin clean. This too, is not true. Psoriasis is not caused by hygiene issues, but is a disease of the immune system. Unfortunately, the myth that psoriasis cannot be inherited does not appear to be true, as children born to parents where one or both suffer from the skin condition do appear to develop psoriasis more often than children whose parents are not psoriasis patients.1

Fast Facts:

  • Myth: Psoriasis is diagnosed easily. Fact: Up to 48% of psoriasis patients report being misdiagnosed early in the history of their condition.2
  • Myth: Psoriasis is merely a skin condition that looks unsightly. Fact: Psoriasis patients often suffer from intense itching and painful lesions. Up to 30% of psoriasis patients will develop psoriatic arthritis as a result of their condition.3
  • Myth: Psoriasis cannot be treated. Fact: Psoriasis can be treated. Over-the-counter medications, prescription medications, various types of therapies, and natural remedies can be used to treat psoriasis.3
