Research Notes on Psoriasis Laser Therapy

The excimer laser and the pulsed dye laser are the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved laser treatments for psoriasis.1 Laser therapy is performed on patients when less than ten percent of the body is affected by localized plaque and after three months of conventional treatment.2 Treatment is performed twice per week at the physician's office for up to ten sessions.1

Fast Facts:

  • Mild sunburn, darkening of skin, sores, blisters, and scarring are complications that may occur during laser therapy.3
  • Plaque psoriasis affects approximately 80 percent of psoriasis patients.2
  • A research study showed the excimer laser was more effective than pulsed dye laser in the treatment of psoriasis; however, the pulsed dye laser required fewer treatments.4
  • Other treatment options include sun and water therapy, topical treatments, systemic medications, and diet.5
