Research Notes on Psoriasis Complications
Psoriatic arthritis, cataracts, scarring, skin cancer, folic acid deficiency, emotional issues, and an increased risk of coronary artery disease are all potential complications of psoriasis.1 Severe itching and bleeding of skin lesions can increase the risk of bacterial infections.2 A recent study suggests that approximately 24% of psoriasis patients suffer from depression.3
Fast Facts:
- Crohn's disease, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes may also be listed as possible psoriasis complications.3
- Lymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma are both seen more frequently in psoriasis patients as opposed to in the general population.3
- Studies have shown that psoriasis patients have a higher risk for substance and alcohol abuse.4
