Research Notes on Provigil and Pregnancy
Women who are pregnant should only use Provigil (modafinil) when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled Provigil as a category C drug, meaning the effects of the medication have not been completely studied in pregnant women. According to studies performed in both pregnant rats and rabbits there was in increase risk of miscarriage and birth defects.1
Fast Facts:
- Consult your physician if taking birth control pills, as Provigil can decrease the effectiveness of the medication leading to pregnancy.2
- Women who plan on breastfeeding while taking Provigil should consult with their physician, as it currently unknown whether the medication is excreted into breast milk.2
- Provigil is a prescription medication used to treat certain types of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy.2
