Research Notes on Protein
Proteins are large organic compounds made of amino acids arranged in a linear chain and joined together by peptide bonds between the carboxyl and amino groups of adjacent amino acid residues. The sequence of amino acids in a protein is defined by a gene and encoded in the genetic code. Although this genetic code specifies 20 "standard" amino acids plus selenocysteine and - in certain archaea - pyrrolysine, the residues in a protein are sometimes chemically altered in post-translational modification: either before the protein can function in the cell, or as part of control mechanisms. ...read more from Wikipedia.
Fast Facts:
- Protein is an important component of every cell in the body.1
- It has various functions: responsible for building structures (ligaments, fingernails, hair), helps in digestion (stomach enzymes), aids in movement (muscles), and plays a part in our ability to see (the lens of our eyes are pure crytalline protein).2
- Foods with protein are grouped as either complete or incomplete proteins. Complete proteins have all nine essential amino acids.3
- An essential amino acid is one that cannot be synthesized de novo by the organism, and therefore, must be supplied in the diet.4
